The Hidden Problem with Activewear

What your leggings aren’t telling you and what to wear instead

We all love a good pair of leggings. They’re stretchy, flattering, and make us feel like we’ve got our life together, whether we’re doing yoga, meal prepping, grocery shopping or just grabbing coffee.

But here’s something most brands don’t talk about: the chemicals hiding in your favorite activewear. Yup, even the high-end ones with the buttery soft finish.

What’s Really in That Fabric?

Many synthetic fabrics used in athletic clothing, like polyester, nylon, and spandex—are treated with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). These are known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily in the body or environment.

PFAS have been linked to:

  • Hormone disruption

  • Fertility issues

  • Immune dysfunction

  • Certain types of cancer

And they’re not just a factory problem. These chemicals can leach into your skin through sweat and friction, especially during workouts.

But It’s Not Just PFAS…

Many athletic brands also use dyes, anti-odor coatings, and finishes that may contain phthalates, formaldehyde, or other endocrine-disrupting compounds, none of which are listed on the tag.

As a Lifestyle Medicine advocate, I believe wellness isn’t just about what we put in our bodies, it’s also about what touches our skin. Our skin is our largest organ, and it’s absorbent.

So, What Can You Do?

Don’t worry, you don’t have to toss your entire drawer of leggings. But a few small shifts can make a big difference over time:

  • Wash new clothes before wearing
  • Avoid “anti-odor,” “stain-resistant,” or “moisture-wicking” labels unless they disclose ingredients
  • Shop brands committed to non-toxic fabrics and transparency (e.g., Pact, Organic Basics, Girlfriend Collective, Wolven, or Threads for Thought)

And yes, wear what you love, but do it consciously.

Bottom Line

Wellness is more than food and fitness, it’s the daily choices we make with what we wear, breathe, and absorb.

If you’re building a lifestyle rooted in prevention and healing, consider taking a closer look at your activewear drawer. Because sometimes, the healthiest move isn’t just a workout, it’s knowing what’s in your wardrobe and environment.
