9 Way to Get your Children to be More Active

9 Way to Get your Children to be More Active

In today's digital age, with endless screens competing for our children's attention, it's becoming increasingly challenging to motivate children to get up, get moving, and embrace an active, more healthy lifestyle. The importance of physical activity for our children's health and well-being cannot be overstated. In this post, we'll explore some effective ways to encourage your children to be more active, and help guide them on a path to a healthier and happier life.

  1. Be a Role Model

One of the most impactful quotes I read was " Children don't do what you say, they do what they see you do"

Children learn by example. As a parent, we are the example. One of the most powerful ways to inspire them to be more active is being active yourself. Find activities you enjoy, and invite your children to join you. Whether it's a family bike ride or hike, a game of soccer, or even dancing around the living room, show them that being active is fun and rewarding.

  1. Create a Fun and Active Environment

Stock your home environment with age-appropriate sports equipment like soccer balls, jump ropes, scooters, and bicycles. If you have a basement, make it a indoor play area that is safe for play during bad weather.

  1. Limit Screen Time

Set clear guidelines on screen time, including TV, computers, video games, and smartphones. I get it, we live in a digital age but there needs to be limits. The rule we keep in our home is no personal screen use Monday-Thursday and then 1 hour daily Friday-Sunday. Find what works for your family.

  1. Find Their Interests

Discover what physical activities your children enjoy most. Some may prefer team sports like soccer, tennis, or basketball, while others may thrive in activities like swimming, dance, gymnastics, or martial arts. Encourage them to explore their interests and choose activities they enjoy.

  1. Set Goals and Challenges

Set achievable physical activity goals for your children. For instance, challenge them to complete a certain number of steps in a day or aim to learn a new skill. Celebrate their achievements and encourage them to keep going. Boost their confidence and motivation.

  1. Make It a Family Affair

Family time is precious, and it's an excellent opportunity to be active together. Plan regular family outings that involve physical activity, such as biking, hiking, or signing up for a race together. These shared experiences create lasting memories and reinforce the value of being active as a family.

  1. Be Supportive

While it's essential to encourage physical activity, avoid being overly pushy or competitive. Let your children choose their activities and allow them to enjoy the process of learning new skills. Support their efforts and provide positive reinforcement.

  1. Celebrate Small Wins

Every step toward a more active lifestyle is a victory. Celebrate small wins and improvements in their physical abilities. Positive reinforcement fosters a love for being active and keeps them motivated.

  1. Teach Them About the Benefits:

Find teaching moments and explain to your children why being active is essential for their health and well-being. Help them understand how it can make them stronger, boost their mood and creativity, and improve their overall quality of life.

Keep in mind that the end goal is to make physical activity a natural and enjoyable part of your children's lives. Providing them with opportunities, support, and a positive environment, you'll help them develop a lifelong love for being active and healthy.
