Have you ever thought about making your own yogurt? It seems intimidating but believe me it is super easy after making it a handful of times!

I use this yogurt in my parfaits (be sure to check out my granola recipes), for the "drizzle" on some of my grain/protein bowls, as a side for our Indian dishes (balances the "oops too much spice" really nice), etc. It is smooth and creamy, it truly is pure perfection!

No fuss, just fun, heat up some whole milk, let it cool, throw in a splash of yogurt love, let it cozy up, and voilà!

All you need is a candy thermometer, a pot, and a glass jar to store it in (a large size Parfait or Weck jar works well).

Enjoy!

XO,

Tools:
  • Medium-sized saucepan
  • Thermometer
  • Whisk
  • Glass jars with lids
  • Dish towel
  • Unused microwave or oven

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 liter milk (may use 1%, 2%, or whole milk)
  • 1 packet yogurt starter OR 2-4 tbsps of plain yogurt

Directions

Begin by pouring 1/4 cup of water into a medium sized sauce pan and heating it, this is to wet the pan. Now add the milk into the saucepan and heating it over medium heat until it reaches a boil, stir occasionally.

Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the milk to cool to a temperature between 110-115 degrees Fahrenheit (this may take about 30-40 minutes).

While in the sauce pan, whisk in 2 tablespoon of yogurt.

Pour the milk-yogurt mixture into clean glass jars, adjusting the quantity based on the jar size.

Cover the jars with 1-2 dish towels each and place them in an unused microwave or oven for an incubation period of 6-8 hours. The longer the incubation, the firmer and tangier the yogurt will be, as well as promoting the formation of more beneficial bacteria.

Upon completion of the incubation, remove the glass jars and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours before using. Your homemade yogurt is ready to be enjoyed!

Serve it plain or with your favorite toppings like fruit, honey, or granola.

Remember to save a small amount of this batch to use as a starter for your next homemade yogurt adventure!
