The picture looks amazing and the name sounds interesting BUT what exactly is a paratha?? Let me explain...

A paratha is a type of flatbread, originated in India and surrounding areas. It is made from a base of flour, salt, water, and ghee. You can add so many other ingredients to this delicious flatbread to make it your own. This recipe here includes avocado, onions, garlic and so many other nourishing spices and herbs.

We eat this paratha at breakfast or lunch, dipped in plain yogurt (refer to my Homemade Yogurt recipe) and a side of avocado and veggies.

It took me a few attempts before mastering the paratha cooking skills but I promise it gets easier! As they say... practice makes perfect!

If you do not use all the dough, you can store it in the fridge for 2-3 days in an airtight container and cook when needed.

Enjoy!

Bobbielee

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 avocado
  • 1 1/4 cups (+ 3 tbsp) spelt flour
  • 1/4 cup cilantro chopped
  • 1/4 cup red onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 3/4 tsp garam masala
  • 3/4 tsp ground cumin powder
  • 3/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • flour (extra for dusting when rolling the paratha)
  • sea salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Peel the avocado, remove the meat and mash it using a fork.

Add the cumin, garam masala, turmeric, salt and pepper, cilantro, onions, and lemon juice - mix well.

Add the spelt flour to the avocado mix and knead it with your hand into a soft dough (add warm water by the tbsp, if required).

Let the ball of dough sit for 10-20 minutes.

Heat a skillet on the stove top on medium heat (I use a cast iron one that my MIL brought from India).

Make equal size balls from the dough (I make 7-9)

Take a ball, dust it with flour and flatten it out using your hands. Then roll it out using a rolling pin.

Place the rolled out paratha onto the heated skillet and let it cook, you will see some bubbles (45-60 seconds).

Flip the paratha and cook this side the same.

Flip the paratha again and pat it down with a towel or a spatula for a few seconds.

Remove from the heat and add some butter. Serve hot with yogurt, fresh vegetables, and/or chutney.

Enjoy!
